Contributed by Jim Wilson, Athens, GA: By 1885 Davis County was named for Jefferson Davis, president of the confederacy. The boundaries of the county shifted quite a bit but eventually, the main part of the county was rename Geary County. Note that Allen County from the 1880 census was a free-state settlement named for the governor of Ohio. In the 1850s, Kansas was a scene of bloody conflict between free-state and slave-state interests. It was known as "Bleeding Kansas" and it took decades for some of the latent hostility to go away.
