« Back to the family of John Pickering of Crowton.
The area adjacent to the River Weaver tow path, near Dutton Lock and Dutton Viaduct has been known as "Pickering's", "Pickering's Lock" , "Pickering's de Boat" or "Pickering's O' the Boat". A portion of the 1721 River Weaver map below shows Pickerings Boat clearly defined.
Description of property for sale, 2013. "Set amongst the beautiful Cheshire countryside is this four bedroom property full of character and charm. Step through the door of Pickerings O the Boat and you will at once feel the warmth of the cottage with its low ceilings and open fires. The Cottage is situated close to the Weaver Way footpath which offers beautiful riverside walks to both Frodsham and Northwich. The cottage briefly comprises: Entrance porch, sitting room, lounge, family room, conservatory, open plan kitchen/dining room, utility room and w.c. to conclude the ground floor. The first floor accommodation boasts a master bedroom with Juliet balcony and en-suite, plus three further bedrooms and a family bathroom. The views from both the front and rear bedrooms are stunning."
A charmingly curious 1652 map which, though not drawn to scale, seems to be connected with early attempts to enclose Crowton and Crewood commons. The extent of Crowton Marsh and references to the lands owned the the Pickering families are quite discernible.
